Who we are
Made by a curator, for a gallery.
The Spine was conceived at Caviar, a contemporary art gallery, by its curator, Samuel Casavella: a senior creative director with more than two decades in brand strategy, art and design, who has brought that discipline to software.
Where it comes from.
A gallery runs on works that come and go, artists who need to know where their work is, collectors who ask years later, and documents that must be in the right place on the right day.
The tools available were designed for other industries and asked the art to fit their structure. The Spine was built the other way round: from the daily operations of a gallery, one screen at a time.
Between art and engineering.
He has always worked where the two meet: trained in Fine Arts, Graphic Arts and design engineering, with software as part of the path from the start, and years of brand and product work in Spain and the United Kingdom.
As a curator he has brought art to places it rarely goes, and has seen how the art world works in more than twenty countries.
The principle.
The system exists for the art. The art never exists for the system.
Every screen begins with a question the people of a house actually ask: where is it, who is waiting, what is missing. The answer is given in plain words, not codes.
What we stand by.
People decide.
The system prepares, reminds and warns. Sending, signing and changing remain with a person.
The house warns; it never forbids.
If a work is about to travel without insurance, you are told. The decision is still yours.
Only what is signed is promised.
An artist is never told a work is insured until the document exists.
Silence is a valid answer.
When nothing requires your attention, the house says nothing rather than fill your morning with noise.
Nothing is destroyed with a single click.
What is deleted goes to the bin first, and what has been sent remains as it was sent.
Design as a discipline.
Calm screens, one matter at a time, short titles that never make you stop to think. The space around a sentence is treated with the same care as the sentence itself.
Software entrusted with art should meet the standard of the work it holds.
