Architecture

Why The Spine is built this way.

The Spine is born inside art. It does not treat a work as an item with a code: it treats it as something with an author, a history, and people who look after it. Every decision below comes from there.

It tells you what matters today.

Each morning Conscience reads the whole house and brings one thing to the front: the next one that matters, with its reason and the door to it already open. Nobody has to search for what to do next. When nothing needs you, it says so.

A desk for each person, with nothing to learn.

Artists, galleries, collectors and institutions each come in through a door of their own and find a desk that shows only what is theirs, in the words of their trade rather than the words of a database.

It promotes artists, works and activities.

Every artist, every work and every exhibition can have its public page, made from the same records the house works with every day. Nothing is written twice. What is sold, what is travelling and what is new appears on the website when the house decides, and the journal links to its artists and works.

The artist says yes to every journey.

Before a work travels, its artist is asked. Their consent, their credit line and where each of their works is are part of the system, not an email to remember. For an artist that is trust; for the house, it is how good artists choose to stay.

Everything is one story.

The work, the people around it, its papers, its journey and its insurance are connected in one thread. A certificate lands on its work, its person and its journey; a loan carries its works, its transport and its papers together.

The data belongs to the house, and AI helps without deciding.

Everything lives on the house’s own server and can be exported in open formats, readable without us. The Spine works fully without AI: the rules of the house decide what matters. If a language model is switched on, it may only rewrite a sentence, and no name, email, phone number or address ever travels to it. The house decides; the software reminds and warns, and never blocks.

More in Security and your data.

Why WordPress.

Because promoting is publishing, and publishing is what WordPress does best: pages, images, a journal, clear addresses, and being found by search engines. Software that keeps works well but cannot show them does only half of an art house’s job.

Because the house is probably there already. A large share of the web runs on WordPress. The Spine installs in the house’s own site, with its own look: no new server, no monthly account with a third party, nobody has to move.

Because anyone can look after it. Developers who know WordPress are everywhere, so a house never depends on us. And it is not a cage: the knowledge of the house can be taken out whole.

And security?

WordPress’s reputation rarely comes from its core, which is closely maintained. It comes from abandoned sites and from badly written third-party plugins. The Spine needs no other plugin to run. Its package is signed; every form carries its own security key; each person can only see and do what is theirs; the door waits after repeated wrong attempts, through every entrance; the public website calls no outside service, not even for its fonts. The Spine does not add the risks that gave WordPress its reputation.

And for developers?

It is boring technology, chosen on purpose: what has to last for years is not built on this year’s fashion. The Spine’s own model, services and rules are its own code, kept apart from WordPress, which is the layer that publishes. And every change is made in small steps, each with a test that fails before and passes after, and a review. That is what a careful developer hopes to find when they open the code.
